Trauma has a way of staying with us long after the event itself has passed — living in the body, intruding into the present, and shaping how we see ourselves and the world around us in ways that can be deeply painful and disruptive. For many people, traditional talk therapy alone does not fully reach the parts of the brain and body where traumatic memories are stored. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy was specifically developed to address exactly this — to help the brain complete the natural processing of traumatic memories and restore a sense of safety, wholeness, and forward momentum. At Guardian Recovery – Princeton Psychiatry & Counseling, we offer EMDR therapy as part of our comprehensive mental health treatment services for individuals throughout Princeton and the greater Mercer County, NJ area.
Our trained and experienced EMDR therapists provide this powerful, evidence-based treatment in a safe, carefully paced, and deeply compassionate therapeutic environment. We understand that working with trauma requires a foundation of trust and safety, and we are committed to building exactly that with every person we work with.
What Is EMDR Therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured psychotherapy approach developed by psychologist Dr. Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s. It was originally developed for the treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and has since been extensively researched and validated as an effective treatment for trauma and a range of other mental health conditions. EMDR is endorsed by major health organizations including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Psychiatric Association as an evidence-based treatment for trauma.
How EMDR Works
EMDR therapy is based on the understanding that traumatic experiences can become “stuck” in the brain’s processing system — stored in a raw, unprocessed form that retains the emotional intensity, sensory details, and negative beliefs associated with the original experience. When a traumatic memory is triggered, the brain essentially re-experiences it as though it were happening in the present rather than processing it as a memory of something that has passed.
EMDR works by activating the brain’s natural information processing system through bilateral stimulation — most commonly guided eye movements, though tapping or auditory tones may also be used. While attending to this bilateral stimulation, the individual holds the traumatic memory in mind along with associated emotions, body sensations, and negative beliefs. This process allows the brain to reprocess the memory more adaptively, reducing its emotional charge, integrating it as a past event rather than an ongoing threat, and replacing associated negative beliefs with more accurate, empowering ones.
The Eight Phases of EMDR Therapy
EMDR therapy follows a structured eight-phase protocol. History taking and treatment planning involves a thorough assessment of the individual’s history and identification of target memories for processing. Preparation involves establishing a strong therapeutic relationship, providing psychoeducation about EMDR, and developing stabilization and coping skills. Assessment involves activating the target memory and identifying associated cognitions, emotions, and body sensations. Desensitization involves the active reprocessing of the target memory using bilateral stimulation. Installation involves strengthening the positive cognition associated with the reprocessed memory. Body scan involves checking for any remaining physical tension or disturbance related to the memory. Closure involves returning to a state of equilibrium at the end of each session. Reevaluation at the beginning of each new session assesses the progress made and determines the next steps.
Mental Health Conditions EMDR Treats
While EMDR was originally developed for PTSD, research has demonstrated its effectiveness for a range of mental health conditions, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Complex PTSD, anxiety disorders, panic disorder, depression rooted in traumatic experiences, phobias, grief and loss, and performance anxiety. Our clinicians at Guardian Recovery – Princeton Psychiatry & Counseling are skilled at applying EMDR appropriately and effectively across this range of conditions.
Our Approach to EMDR Therapy in Princeton, NJ
At Guardian Recovery – Princeton Psychiatry & Counseling, we provide EMDR therapy within a broader framework of trauma-informed, individualized mental health care. We understand that every person’s trauma history and therapeutic needs are unique, and we integrate EMDR into personalized treatment plans that are carefully tailored to each individual’s readiness, goals, and overall clinical picture.
Safety and Stabilization First
For individuals with complex trauma histories or significant dissociation, we prioritize establishing a thorough foundation of safety and stabilization before beginning active trauma reprocessing. This preparation phase is not a delay — it is an essential investment in ensuring that EMDR work is as effective and well-tolerated as possible. Our clinicians are skilled at assessing readiness and pacing EMDR work in a way that keeps each individual within their window of tolerance throughout the process.
EMDR as Part of a Comprehensive Treatment Plan
EMDR therapy is most effective when integrated into a comprehensive mental health treatment plan that may also include individual therapy, psychiatric care, and other evidence-based therapeutic approaches. Our team at Guardian Recovery – Princeton Psychiatry & Counseling works collaboratively to ensure that EMDR is delivered within a coherent, well-coordinated treatment framework that addresses all dimensions of each individual’s mental health.
